Detailed Description

Per-area render settings the game reads with the area id ($8A).

The game indexes the ZSCustomOverworld main palette, animated GFX, tile GFX group, and subscreen overlay tables with $8A, which is the parent screen of a large/wide/tall area. The child screens' own table entries are never read, so child maps render with their parent's values. The child's raw values stay untouched so saves round-trip byte-for-byte.
